Unite! To celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day and highlight the strength and solidarity among and towards all women, Archined, Independent School for the City and Lara Schrijver have taken the initiative to screen Lizzie Borden’s post-punk feminist cult classic Born in Flames (1983) at the School!
Born in Flames by Lizzie Borden (1983, US) tells the story of a radical women’s army active in the streets of New York, who came together after the democratic-socialist revolution continued to fail women. The guerrilla-styled film not only shows the streets of a pre-gentrification New York, it unlocks a feminist future that continues to inspire today.
With an introduction by feminist, theorist and film fanatic Lara Schrijver, the film will be read and discussed through the lens of the 1980’s feminist movement, its urban setting, the choice of genre (agitprop/science fiction) and its far-reaching influence to this day.
