The Independent School for the City is a new interdisciplinary and proudly independent education platform that offers unique opportunities for ambitious students from all over the world to delve into the issues at the very forefront of contemporary Urban(ism) theory and practice through an educational programme of Stories, Strategies and Action. The Independent School for the City offers various stand-alone courses, ranging from a 4-day crash course on filmmaking in relation to architecture and the city, to an intensive 12-week programme on contemporary urbanism. The activist and multidisciplinary approach of the Independent School is strongly embedded in all activities, whether you participate in one single course or sign up for all of them.
The School is open to all personalities that deal with the City - not only those with a background in Architecture and Planning - but also History, Sociology, Art, Psychology, Film, and other urban studies. - the more diverse the backgrounds of the students, the more interesting things will get!
To be eligible for the programme, you preferably hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Architecture, Design, Planning, Sociology, History etc. Alternatively, we might accept you if you hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or have demonstrable relevant experience and/or intellectual credentials.
All courses will be in English, so a competency in both spoken and written English is required.

In order to make an application for the intensive 3 Month programme ‘Follow the Money’, we kindly ask you to register your personal details and submit your CV and examples of your previous work (max 4 pages). The application deadline is 20 October 2019. Selection will be based on the provided documents to which we will consider the professional and cultural diversity of the group we want to form. You will receive a confirmation of acceptance before 04 November 2019.

Application to this two-week research and design studio on city development and the roles of architecture, property and capital is on a first come, first serve basis. Participants can register here The application deadline is 22 September 2019. The course will be cancelled and refunded in case less than 10 participants enrol. Participants will be informed before the 27th of September 2019.

Application to this one-week studio researching the fossil addiction of a city through photography is on a first come, first serve basis. Participants can register here.
