Investigating Algorithms

A workshop (14:00 - 16:00) and public lecture (17:00 - 19:00) with Júlia Nueno Guitart (PhD fellow at Forensic Architecture), about investigative methods for analysing AI systems through spatial evidence, testimonies, and digital mappings. Organised in collaboration with SocTalk, Erasmus University. Thursday 19 March 2026

Since the start of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza , Forensic Architecture has been collecting data related to attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure by the Israeli military. Their analysis reveals the near-total destruction of civilian life in Gaza and the repeated, large-scale displacement of the Palestinian population across Gaza.

Individuated Mass Killing: A counter-forensics of computational violence in Gaza

The Independent School for the City and SocTalk Erasmus University, have joined forces to invite Júlia Nueno Guitart (PhD fellow at Forensic Architecture) for a workshop and public lecture about her work around investigative methods for analysing AI systems through spatial evidence, testimonies, and digital mappings.

Through the collective work with Forensic Architecture for the genocide case brought by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice, Júlia Nueno Guitart will talk about her research into how genocide is structured through computational systems. This intervention centres on Gaza, examining how AI-guided targeting, evacuation orders, and biometric checkpoints fragment life into data points—triggering violence that radiates outward and erodes the conditions for life. These technologies, often described as precise or neutral, instead enable scalable and repeatable harm. The intervention proposes individuated mass killing as a framework for understanding how computation organises extermination, both locally and as part of a wider techno-political order.

The lecture takes place on the 19th of March between 17:00 - 19:00h and is free of charge. You just need to register here

Workshop Mapping AI: Tools and Spatial Techniques for Investigating Algorithms

In this workshop, Júlia Nueno Guitart, PhD fellow at Forensic Architecture, introduces a set of investigative methods for analysing AI systems through spatial evidence, testimonies, and digital mappings. Drawing on case studies and digital tools, she will show how computational systems extend far beyond code—reshaping environments, reorganising territories, and intensifying violence through automated decision-making. This approach reveals the material and political impact of AI, particularly in transforming military strategy, and offers new ways to critically engage with its far-reaching consequences on the physical world.

The workshop takes place on the 19th of March between 14:00 - 16:00 and is free of charge, you just need to register here. Limited places available

About Júlia Nueno Guitart

Júlia Nueno Guitart is a researcher and computational designer. Her work explores the computational systems that organize life and the spaces we inhabit, with the goal of developing new ways of understanding and acting with and through them. She is currently a member of the Forensic  Architecture team and is pursuing her PhD at the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths (University of London)

This event is organised in collaboration with the SocTalk initiative based at the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Erasmus University.
