School party 2026

A festive School's Out! XL evening with a lecture by Sam Jacob, DJ’s Steve Balearics and Kanjebest, a live band and more! Friday 27 March 2026, 20:00 - Late.

School's Out #57 - School party

On 27 March, we once again organised our annual school party! The programme included a lecture by British architect and designer Sam Jacob, music by DJ's Steve Balearics and Kanjebest, Rotterdam-based punk band "De Jeugd", a performance by Sere and a great mix of people!

The talk by Sam Jacob was called: Bananas! Using this fruit as a symbolic thread to explore modernity. From Joseph Paxton at Chatsworth House, through empire, the Crystal Palace and the Great Exhibition, to the United Fruit Company, the CIA and imperialism via slapstick and the avant garde to a courtside Roger Federer, the talk was an attempt at the first draft of the unified theory of the banana. Desire, disease, power and symbolism. In this talk the banana acted as a Hitchcockian McGuffin allowing us to follow narrative arcs that trace an outline of modernity.
