Can architecture be more than parachuting shiny objects into the city? Djamel Klouche believes so. Not the object or its iconography is the object of his fascination, but the city as a living organism of forms, spaces, shapes and people, in which architecture should be precisely inserted. His office, L’AUC, finds urbanity anywhere, not just in the precious inner cities, but also in the post war banlieues and the post-industrial wastelands on the edges of the metropolis. Their mission is to understand the contemporary city, through architecture.

For the 3rd edition of Back to School with…  we’ve invited architect Arna Mačkić to curate a series around the topic of the architecture of memory. How can places of memory and monuments be designed that do not offer a one dimensional perspective on history, but that underline a shared past and a collective future? Places of remembrance that urge people to reassess their perspective and play a part in the daily lives of the urban communities. During this series we will look at different approaches by architects, activists and researchers in thinking about and designing places of remembrance.

Tuesday 31 October, 21 November and 12 December 2023. Tickets for the separate events are 17,50 euro and include a simple dinner. An entrance package for all three evenings is available for 45 euro. Get your tickets here

For the second lecture in the Back to School with… series about the Architecture of Memory, curated by Mačkić, she invited Uri Gilad & Inez Tan of office winhov to talk about their design for the National Holocaust Museum in Amsterdam and why they believe that ‘the architecture should not get in the way of what happened here.’

The Architecture of Memory explores how places of memory and monuments can be designed that do not offer a one dimensional perspective on history, but that underline a shared past and a collective future? Places of remembrance that urge people to reassess their perspective and play a part in the daily lives of the urban communities.

Green plays an important role in both the original planning and the current transformation tasks of the New Towns. The current green task focuses mainly on the climatological impact on our living environment and health. It involves encouraging biodiversity, combating heat stress, preventing flooding and stimulating health. At the same time the New Towns were originally designed as green towns, with ideas on ecology and use of (collective) space. But what do we know about these approaches? What were the original ideas on design, use and ecology of Green space in the New Towns from the 70s and 80? The central question of the day is: How do we deal with the notions of greenery, public spaces, ecology and heritage in the context of Post-65 New Towns?

Do architects rearrange the city according to their own models and methods, and do we just live in it? Eva Pfannes of the architecture office  Ooze, doesn’t think so. Ooze believes that space is subjective, and that changing it is a matter of personal politics. Therefore Ooze works across all scales, from the ephemeral art project, to the large scale urbanist or architectural project. A sense of urban poetry is what binds their work together and what allows their projects to get under the skin of the urban dweller.

Friday 24 November 2023. Doors open at 18:00. Events starts at 19:00. Tickets available for 5 euro.
