School’s Out! #41 with Camiel van Winkel

School’s Out! #41 with Camiel van Winkel. Friday 19 April 2024, 19:00 – 22:00. Drinks, tunes, bites and a conversation between Camiel van Winkel and Lara Schrijver, with film fragments

For the 41st edition of School’s Out! on Friday 19 April, we invited Camiel van Winkel and Lara Schrijver to talk about Camiel’s latest book Lichaam en steen. Over film (Body and Stone. About film).

In this book, the film medium figures as the unconscious of culture. Van Winkel takes it seriously as an art form with a value in itself, but at the same time, he interprets it as a reflection of symptoms and effects of cultural dilemmas and taboos. He watches films but also looks through them. With a view trained in contemporary art and dance, Van Winkel interprets films by diverse directors such as Steve McQueen and Nicolas Provost, Ursula Antoniak and Michael Haneke, Tobe Hooper and Ilya Chrzjanovski, Lars von Trier and Chantal Akerman, Gus Van Sant and Erik Poppe.

Camiel van Winkel is an art historian who writes about contemporary art and cinema. He is a senior lecturer and researcher at LUCA School of Arts in Brussels and the author of various books among which: The Regime of Visibility, The Myth of Artisthood, and During the Exhibition the Gallery Will Be Closed: Contemporary Art and the Paradoxes of Conceptualism. In close collaboration with artist Joke Robaard he published ‘Archive Species’ as the result of an in depth inquiry into the representation of the clothed body in print media since the 1970s.
