School's Out! #7 with Liza Fior

The speaker on the 7th edition of School’s Out! on the last Friday of September 2019, was the British architect and designer Liza Fior - founding partner of MUF Architecture/Art, a legendary London-based practice that combines dreamlike compositions of shapes and materials with gripping narratives. Established in the mid 90s as a new type of practice that would blur the ‘fuzzy edges’ between buildings and city, architecture, art, and the structures of society, MUF has worked on various public spaces, buildings and exhibitions that have the depth and complexity of places with a history of centuries. One such project was a development strategy for the Hofbogen in Rotterdam. Liza talked about the way that unsolicited research into the spatial, social and economic infrastructures of the built environment re-shape the architectural brief.

Liza Fior is a lecturer at the MA Architecture: Cities and Innovation at UAL’s Central St Martins and was previously a Visiting Professor at Yale School of Architecture. As part of muf, she was awarded the 2008 European Prize for Public Space for the new town square for Barking. She is the co-author of This is What We Do: A muf manual (Batsford Ltd, 2001) and Design Advocate for the London Mayor.
